How to Choose a Car Audio Head Unit

There are so many different head units available these days that making an informed decision on which one to buy is a long process. I happen to know that about 99% of people have the same goals:

1. Get a unit with all of the best features.

2. Save money on that unit.

You’re in luck, because that’s what this guide is all about!

A quick note about HYPE:

There are lots of retailers and parties on the internet that would like you to believe certain things about car audio. What is boils down to is that these people really just want to sell you something, and take some of your $$$ with them. When deciding on stereo equipment, it’s best to rely on the advice of neutral parties rather than retailers and marketers. Don’t fall into the trap of information pollution!

OK, then.

When you buy a head unit, basically you are looking for a control system for your entire stereo. You should be sure that whatever unit you buy can handle all of the tasks you want your unit to handle. Some things to think about:

Do I want a CD changer?
Do I want to connect my iPod (or other MP3 device)?
Do I want to use satellite radio?
Do I want any sort of mobile video?
Do I need any EQ/DSP/Time correction features?
Do I want to focus on Sound Quality or SPL?
Do I want to be able to play MP3 or other digital music files?
Do I want to connect amplifiers? If so, how many?
How much of a stereo system am I going to build around this head unit?

There are probably other things that you would want to think about as well, but these are just a few ideas to get your head going.

Once you have decided on all of this stuff, you can start narrowing down your head unit list. The next thing you’ll want to do is look at all of the specifications, and see what unit is the best choice. A quick note about specifications: Some people get really obsessed with finding a unit that somehow magically has the best specifications. What I mean is that people look for units that not only have the highest s/n ratio, but also the lowest THD, the most features, the highest bit DAC, etc. etc. NOW! I will say that most units from the top manufacturers are good enough to form the basis of a high-end stereo system. The truth is that many of these specifications are measured by a computer, and humans can’t really perceive the differences between .03% and .05% THD. So, don’t worry about it! If you find a unit that has all of the features you NEED, and has acceptable performance, just buy it! Like many people have said before me: "Don’t sweat the small stuff". Compromising on one little specification is not going to make your music sound bad.

So, you’re probably pretty close to making a great decision on the best head unit for your vehicle.

Now, you need to examine a few more things:

Budget – How much can you spend?
Build quality – How well made is the unit?
Warranty – Does the unit come with a good warranty?

Obviously, some of these considerations will mean more to some people than others. That’s OK! This is your head unit, and ultimately, the goal is to get the best unit that suits all of your needs.

How To Check And Fill Radiator Coolant

The good thing is that it only takes a moment to check your radiator coolant levels. In most vehicles, the coolant will be an opaque white plastic tank sitting near the radiator. It’s not completely opaque. The tank is transparent enough for you to see the coolant levels and determine whether or not you need more. The tank also contains markings to help you measure those levels. You should always check your radiator coolant level when your car is cold.

If your levels are fine, then there’s nothing to be concerned about. However, insufficient coolant levels are unsafe for your automobile so make sure you are taking measures to correct the level. An engine requires a mixture of coolant and water at a ratio of 50% of each. Fortunately, you do not need to create the mixture yourself in the exact amount. Now, you can go to your auto supplies retailer and get it premixed ready to use. To do it yourself would require lots of trial and error until one achieved the perfect mixture. How To Change A Car Tire

Changing a tire in case of a flat is a good basic skill to know if you’re a driver. It takes some time but you save on the cost of calling for roadside assistance. It’ll also save you the wait and you can get to where you’re going without being to seriously held up.

You’ll always want to review your vehicle owner’s manual for the correct procedure for changing a tire on your particular model and make. The following are only general guidelines for a tire change so always consult your owner manual first.

Locate your Tools

The tools needed for a tire change:
Jack
Rubber mallet
Wheel nut wrench
Tire iron, pry bar or large screwdriver
Wheel lock key (if you have a wheel lock)
Wheel chocks or bricks

Caution: Safety First

You should never go underneath a vehicle that is only supported by a car jack. If you must do this, make sure you have get an approved jack for this procedure. Always wear some eye protection when working on or around your vehicle.

Prepare For Tire Change

Make sure your vehicle is parked on a firm, level surface. If this is difficult where you are then, make it as level as you possibly can.

Next, check to see that you have placed your vehicle in the “Park” position if it has an automatic transmission. If your vehicle has a manual transmission then you should check to see that is placed in the “Reverse” position. Now, you can go ahead and apply the parking brake and remove the car key from the ignition.

You should place a brick, or wheel chock if you have one, diagonally opposite the wheel that is to be changed. For example, if you are changing the left front tire, you should place the brick or wheel chock at the right rear tire. If you can place bricks or wheel chocks at both wheels, this would provide you wit even more safety and is recommended if possible.

Removing The Wheel

Some vehicles have separate wheel covers. If your vehicle does, use a pry bar to remove them first. Remove wheel covers by placing the pry bar beneath the edge of the wheel cover and then gently pry the wheel cover upwards. Repeat this at different points around the wheel cover until it starts to loosen, then remove the entire wheel cover. If your vehicle has a wheel lock key, fit the key to the wheel lock and place your lug wrench onto it. Turn the lug wrench clockwise until the wheel lock becomes loose.

Once you are done the above, place the wheel lock in a safe place. Be sure to place it where there is no chance for it to roll away and possible crack the other lug nuts. What you are trying to do is loosen the lug nuts only. You do not want to remove them completely. If you find that he lug nut is difficult to remove, you can place the lug wrench on the lug nut until it gets near to horizontal with the ground. Then, stand safely close to the end of the lug wrench and do a little hop or jump. This should crack that tight lug nut loose.

Now place the jack in position following your vehicle’s manual instructions. Most of the time, this will be under the body of your vehicle, just forward of the rear wheels and to the rear of the front wheels. If the ground is grassy, sandy or soggy place some plywood under the jack. This will provide a clear workspace.

Then, carefully and steadily raise the vehicle until the tire is just barely making contact with the ground. Using your lug wrench, remove all the lug nuts and place them aside to a safe area. Raise your vehicle with jack until the wheel clears the ground. Now remove the wheel.

Accelerating slowly will cut down on the fuel burnt up and put less strain on the engine, braking early will mean you are less likely to need to hammer on the brakes at the last minute. Your suspension will last longer if you go slowly over speed bumps and round corners too.

By braking early you are less likely to skid, losing tyre grip, and wearingdown brake pads.

Lower your speed

Many drivers have found that by driving over 60mph can increase your petrolconsumption significantly, tests have shown that those who drive at 60mph orless have travelled more miles between refuelling than those who drive over60mph. As well as saving you money on fuel driving under 60mph should also helpyou avoid fines too as there is a chance if you’re burning through petrol over60mph then there’s a chance you’re breaking the speed limit anyway!
